In a world where rights are no longer defended, the Centarri Corps work to maintain the borders of society. Into their ranks is dragged a convict, Anna, who reluctantly joins to escape execution. Immediately paired with Stavan, a neurodivergent agent, she struggles to survive mission after mission facing dangerous worlds and situations. An orphan conscripted into the Centarri to work off his debt, Stavan was implanted early as an experiment. As a result, he has lost all connection with himself and others, focused only on ships and piloting them. But when he is paired with Anna, something begins to awaken deep inside. Just as the two have solidified their partnership, Stavan is thrown out of the Centarri. Wounded in forsaken, he survives homeless in the Ildyss city of Spartaan until found by an old acquaintance. With Jerry’s help, he works to find a way to free Anna from the Centarri-before her final mission.
